چکیده

The discovery of an atomic sodium exosphere at Mercury raises the question of whether Mercury, like I0 at Jupiter, can maintain a heavy ion magnetosphere. We suggest that it does, and that heavy ions (mainly Na ÷) from the exosphere are typically accelerated to keV energies and make important or dominant contributions to the mass (~300 g sec -1) and energy ( 3 x 109 W) budget s of the magnetosphere. The sodium supply to the exosphere is largely from within Mercury itself, with external sources like meteoroid infall and the solar wind being relatively unimportant. Therefore Mercury is in the process of losing its semivolatiles. Photosputtering dominates charged particle sputtering and can maintain an adequate rate of Na ejection from the surface. © 1987 Academic

Mercury’s sodium exosphere: Magnetospheric ion recycling

[1] A three-dimensional Monte Carlo model of Mercury’s neutral sodium exosphere was used to describe correlation between the observed variations in the exospheric density and the variations in the surface concentration of sodium along Mercury’s motion around the Sun [Leblanc and Johnson, 2003]. Four processes of ejection were taken into account: thermal and photon stimulated desorptions, solar ...

Self-consistent 3D modeling of Mercury's solar wind- surface-exosphere interaction

It can be speculated that the composition of Mercury’s exosphere is related to the composition of Mercury’s crustal materials. If this relationship is true, then inferences regarding the bulk chemistry of the planet might be made from a thorough exospheric study. The most vexing of all unsolved problems is the uncertainty in the source of each component which depends highly on the solar activit...

Return to Mercury: a global perspective on MESSENGER's first Mercury flyby.

In January 2008, the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft became the first probe to fly past the planet Mercury in 33 years. The encounter revealed that Mercury is a dynamic system; its liquid iron-rich outer core is coupled through a dominantly dipolar magnetic field to the surface, exosphere, and magnetosphere, all of which interact with the sol...

Mercury: the planet and its orbit

The planet closest to the Sun, Mercury, is the subject of renewed attention among planetary scientists, as two major space missions will visit it within the next decade. These will be the first to return to Mercury, after the flybys by NASA’s Mariner 10 spacecraft in 1974–5. The difficulties of observing this planet from the Earth make such missions necessary for further progress in understandi...

MERCURY In-flight calibration of the PHEBUS UV instrument & Monte Carlo modelling of the hydrogen exosphere MEA SIMON WEDLUND

A unique feature of Mercury’s space environment is its strongly coupled surfaceexosphere-magnetosphere-solar wind system, which can be remotely monitored by space missions such as Mariner 10, MESSENGER and soon BepiColombo and by ground-based observatories. Mercury’s exosphere is a very complex medium with only a few species detected so far, including atomic hydrogen. H has only been detected o...
